Survivor

In our plot for our trailer, we begin the trailer with the 'survivor' scene. We wanted the survivor to look pale and tired because they were distressed by the events of that night so we had to use alot of make up because I'm acting as the one left surviving in the group and I'm quite tanned.
We used concealer to make my face looked pale.

We also put concealer around my eyes so that they looked tired.

We didn't think that just concealer looked good enough so we put eye liner and mascara under my eyes so it looked like I's been crying and rubbing my eyes.

We smudged the dark eye makeup so that it looked like I'd smudged it myself whilst being distressed and disturbed by the thought of that specific night.

We tried our best to make me look as tired and disturbed as we could wuth the supplies that we had.

We then back-combed my hair to make it look almost as if I'd been dragged backwards through a bush. We hairsprayed it so it stayed like that and then we were ready to film.

Finished 'Survivor' look.

Making our poster

Out of all the posters that we looked at and researched into, we thought that this one would be the best to take inspiration from. We thought this because the image has trees, and a person looking scared. This ties in with our story because the group go camping in a 'forest' and the 'survivor' is left scared by the events of that evening. We won't copy this poster obviously because that would be copyright but it gives us a good idea of how to present our film by poster.

I think this poster works well because it gives the impression of a dark, scary night and it makes you want to watch the film.
The main image is an extreme close up of one of the characters which has been taken to show the fear and sheer panic in their eyes leaving the targeted audience with the same feeling. This also makes the reader want to know why this character is so scared and leave them wondering what they're scared of.
The red symbol above the background information on the poster has been included because it is obviously an important part of the film otherwise it wouldn't have been put on it.
The background information for the film gives the reader an idea of what the film is about and by using the words 'a year later their footage was found', it makes the viewer think that the film is real footage and it makes it seem like a documentary which adds to the suspense.
The woods in the background lets the viewers know where the film is going to be set. The woods look dark and scary. They also look like quite an enclosed space which gives the viewer the impression that someone may be trapped in there or that something has happened.
Because of all the above things, the poster works well, leaving the viewer wanting to see this film because they want to know what happened to these 'students' and because the film seems like real footage, it makes it all the more exciting for the target audience.

Because this poster works so well, we will be trying to use the same elements for our movie poster. We want the viewer to feel slightly on edge about going to see the film but also excited and scared all at the same time. We also want them to think that our trailer is real found footage as well. To do this, we need to have a good poster as well as trailer so that they both support each other because if one was better than the other, it would leave the viewer disappointed.

The Supernatural Activities.

Because our sub-genre is supernatural horror, we needed to have some supernatural activities shown in the trailer. We came up with a few ideas: chair flying across a room, cups/jam jars smashing, 'abandoned' girl and footsteps.

We practised the pulling the chair across the room first. To do this, we used some string. It worked quite well because the string was thick and strong enough to pull the chair at a good speed however, you could see the string because it was yellow so it didn't seem supernatural because you could tell it was being pulled by someone in the next room. This is the chair that we used.

We then re-thought this idea and got some fishing wire. Because the fishing wire was thinner than the string, we used more strands of it attached to more areas of the chair. This worked but it was quite a struggle to pull the chair because it felt as if the wire was going to snap. It snapped a few times but we just tied more wire to the chair to take the strain off each of the strands.
Whilst we were practising this, we realised we could make the chair rock loudly without noticing someone was pulling it so we plan to use this in our trailer because it looked more supernatural than the chair just being pulled across a room. This is one of our first attempts.

We also used the fishing wire to pull the jam jars off the cupboard. We did this in a way so it looked like the jam jars were being thrown at the characters but smashing right in front of them before they manage to hit them. We considered dropping them down the stairs and filming them from the bottom of the stairs but we figured that pulling them off a cupboard would look more supernatural and would make people wonder how its being done as opposed to just dropping them down the stairs which is obvious that someone is upstairs dropping them. We then realised that we had no cupboard that looked old enough to use for our trailer apart from the one that was already in the abandonned house but we didn't feel comfortable smashing things in there because we didn't have permission to do so. So instead, we placed the jars on a wall and pulled them off there with the fishing wire.

We also used the fishing wire to make a mug look as if its moving on a table.

We set this up in this way because we thought it would look as if someone had been in the abandoned house and set it up themselves as if they were sitting down to have a cup of tea. We tied some fishing wire to the handle of the mug and pulled on it to make it look as if the mug was moving itself.

This is what was left of the mugs that we practiced smashing.

Once we had practiced smashing some mugs, we noticed that they smash quickly and if we held the camera by hand then you couldn't see enough of the smash because we couldn't garentee where the smashed parts would fly in the room. Because of this, we decided to set the camera up on a tripod in the corner of the room so we would catch the jars smashing on camera.

Below is the video of us pulling jars off the wall.

These are the stairs that we ran up and down to make the sound track of the footsteps.

We bought a nightie from the local charity shop because we wanted an old fashioned one so that the 'abandoned' girl looked like she'd been left in the house years ago. We wanted an image for our poster and we thought if the girls legs were hanging from somewhere high thenthat would be a good image to start off with. Because we used Matt's little sister to be the 'abandoned girl' and she was at school at the time, we took it in turns to put the nightie on and hang from the top.
This idea didn't work because Matt couldn't hold onto the wooden surface long enough for someone to take a picture and I wasn't tall enough to reach the top.
Amy and Charlotte were videoing and taking pictures so they didn't try the nightie on.

Because this idea for our poster image didn't work, we had to try and think of something else.

Abandoning Our Script

When we started filming our trailer, we started off by filming the first scene because we were using a room at college so it made sense to start with this scene as we were already at college and we thought it'd be the easiest scene to film. However, once we had filmed a few attempts, watching them back we realised that it sounded too scripted. We think the 'survivor' should seem disturbed by the thought of the 'abandoned house' and when we were filming by script, no matter how hard I tried (me, being the survivor), I didn't seem disturbed or hysterical by the thought of this 'camping trip'. Because of this, we decided to abandon our original script.
Now in the first scene, the 'survivor' will still be talking about the trip but I will just make it up as I go along because that makes it sound more real. I will still be talking about the camping trip in the context but just in a different structure because we want our trailer to seem realistic and by doing this, we think it will seem more so.

Final Title

After trying several fonts, we decided on 'Tempus Sans ITC' because we thought it looked the most realistic. By realistic, I mean that this was the font that we would expect to see in a real horror trailer. This was also the one that we thought fitted in with the title best because the font looks thin and not all the letters are there in full. This ties in with the aspect of a house being abandoned because its almost as if the letters have been abandoned or bits have been missed out/forgotten about.

We chose to have a black background because we plan to have a dark, scary trailer and black suits this theme and mood best. We considered having red writing on black but we then bought into consideration the fact that our sub-genre is supernatural/paranormal not slasher horror and we thought that red writing would suggest otherwise because its the same colour as blood.
I also think that the white writing looks better on the black background because they're contrasting colours.

Titles

To decide on our title for our trailer, we did a brainstorm of all the words that we thought would make a good movie.
This is our brainstorm below.

We mainly came up with words that reminded us of the abandoned house that we visited. Our favourite title that we came up with was 'Abandoned'. However, we thought this sounded familiar so we 'googled' it.

This was when we realised that there had already been a film named Abandoned! As we all agreed that we wanted this name for our horror trailer, we thought it'd be a good idea to speak to our media teacher.

After discussing this issue with our teacher, we came to the conclusion that we could use this name and it wouldn't be copyright if we were to do so because we thought of it without knowing that there was already a film called this and there are other films that have the same name as another, that are made by completely different people. Therefore, we chose 'ABANDONED' to be our title for our horror trailer.

Once we had decided on a title, we thought it'd be a good idea to decide how we wanted the title to look when its shown in the trailer so we tried and tested different fonts on a black background to see if we liked any of them.

The different fonts are below.
